I work from home. I spend my days in my little studio, a room on the top floor of my little house in the countryside, which I have organised as my office. I need to distinguish between home and work otherwise I end up doing nothing, that is why I had to isolate the living area from the working one. On the top floor there is only a room and a toilet, and that room is my office. I even set there a coffee corner for my breaks, so that I don’t need to go downstairs and enter the kitchen when I want a break – it would be too risky. In addition to the coffee corner – consisting of a little table with a kettle full of water on it, a teaspoon, a mug and some instant coffee – I have little more in my office: there is my desk facing the big window with some stuff on it and, of course, my laptop; there is a cupboard where I keep all documents and stuff I may need to use; a bookshelf and a chair. Only one chair, the chair, my beloved computer chair.
Why am I so attached to a computer chair? What is so special about it? I don’t really know, it is a quite common computer chair, nothing extra luxurious, no latest model (I have actually had it for seven years now), and it wasn’t among the most expensive when I bought it. I really like sitting on it, though, because even though I spend many hours in the same position, I don’t feel the time passing by. By that I mean that I have no pain, no ache – that you would normally experience if you sit too long on any normal chairs. And because I can sit for ages on my computer chair, I can work more, I can work well and, since I am a freelancer, I am able to earn a good salary.
I am here trying to stress the importance of making your work environment the most solubrious you can. If you try to save money or simply you underestimate the seriousness of a lack of movement, you will end up suffering from many little aches when you are not so young anymore, and what for? And among all things you need to work well when you have a sedentary job, the most important feature you need to care about, is the computer chair. I love it because thanks to it I feel well even after a whole day spent sitting. How many of you can say the same?
